It's really the most convenient for you. No, I'm sorry I haven't been to Bali, but I have traveled around the world as my husband is in the military. Basic steps can ensure that you are safe. If you can, take a bus. The more people around, the better. If there is not one available, find a cab, but make sure that it is clearly marked and the fares are published and visible for everyone to see. If you are heading out, make sure that you have at least a tri-band unlocked cell phone that can be used all over the world, or at least in the part that you will be in. Keep mainly credit cards that are easily turned off if stolen, or travelers checks. Keep only small amounts of local currency in a front pocket, easily reached if you are in need, and hard for pickpockets. Stay on main thoroughfares, and any hotels that you stay at should have local maps of the area so you don't get lost. Just remember to keep your wits about you at all times, good luck and have fun!!
You should check out the Lonely Planet forum for your travelling questions, I used that loads when I was travelling. The Balinese will cheat you, theres absolutely nothing you can do about that so you may as well get used to the idea before you go. Before you book and pay for anything attempt to establish exactly how much its going to cost and exactly what they are going to give you in return (especially when booking guided tours and snorkelling and things). It wont stop them trying to raise the price at the end or only giving you half what you agreed but itll help a bit, it wont ruin youtr trip; its an easy place to travel around and not at all dangerous. The sums of money involved are small anyway; its annoying more than anything. I had a face to face row with some cashier in a restaurant beause she was one of the many restaurant cashiers who didnt want to give me (about 20 cents) my change. When I held out my hand she told me it was 'small money' and as I was 'rich' anyway I should be happy to give it to her. Got me mad! Stuff like that happens all the time and is pretty typical of Indonesians opinions about tourists, like I said its just annoying and it neednt spoil your holiday; just be ready to assert yourself.
Top answerers has given you good answers..in my experiences of traveling..I found as a woman there is always a chance of being in danger, asia or not.. If obviously we do not know the place we are, the more we became a victim..so please make sure that you have much information about the places you are going to see and someone knows where you are going on that time and place..leave note even in your room/hotel that if you hadn't came back home on time, people would know where you been gone. It is right that the more people around you, the more you will be safe. Be alert on many situations.. still traveling is fun when you know how you can deal on situations.
"...Denpasar airport is actually located south of Kuta, some 20 kilometers away. The most hassle-free way to get from the airport to your destination anywhere on Bali is to either arrange a pick-up [by your hotel or hostel] or use the prepaid Airport Taxi Service [check with your airline/travel agent]. If you take a normal taxi outside, check the posted fares for an estimate and insist on the meter. "
