You can only get the info, if any, the person wants to leave. But Internet scammers don't usually have much imagination, especially when it comes to the early come-ons. Pick a key phrase or two, put "quotation marks" around it, and do a Google search. You can also Google the e-mail address but scammers change e-mail addresses more often than they change their underwear so that's not worth much. If the sender isn't using an anonymizer you can track his or her IP address. With Yahoo, go to OPTIONS then to GENERAL PREFERENCES and then under MESSAGES click on the dot at HEADERS for COMPLETE HEADERS FOR MESSAGES RECEIVED. (The exact wording may be different for you; I'm translating from the French version) You can now find the Originating IP address. On a spam I just received it looks like this: [210.108.73.39]. By going to http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp or another WHOIS index (you can find them by searching for <whois> on Google) you can tell where the sender is located -- unless s/he's forged the headers, which spammers almost always do. Be sure to select "IP Address". The result of my search on the above IP address was "OrgName: Asia Pacific Network Information Centre", with lots of additional information included.
If you think it's a scam, it probably is. If someone's telling you that you've won a lottery, contest, sweepstakes that you didn't enter, it's definitely a scam.
