card fraud Question And Answer

Credit card fraud?

I believe that someone has used those checks that come with my credit cards without my permission. There was a $1000 charge to my credit card. I've called my credit card company, and they've put it on hold, but since they haven't received the actual copy of the check yet, I can't do anything for a few days, nor can they see who/what it's payable to. This is the first time I've been the victim of credit card fraud and disputed charges. In general, how likely are the credit cards company to help you out and believe you? I don't want to be charged for $1000 I didn't do!

When they get the check back, they will be able to see who cashed it, at which bank, and what their signature was. I'd say you're pretty secure at this point.
Try not to worry. They will straighten it out and not charge you. I called the credit card companies that send those checks and told them to stop sending them. Always shred your bills after you pay them.
Make sure to inform all creditors. Also contact credit bureaus to get copies of your credit reports and credit scores to make sure there are no errors and no fraudulent activity that you are not aware of. If you report fraud in a timely manner, you're only responsible for the first $50 of fraudulent charges, and some banks won't even hold you to that. It doesn't matter if they believe you or not. If they think you're trying to rip them off, they have to prove it.
Some idiot probably got your statement in the mail by accident and used the checks. Those checks can be traced. You are not liable.
