card fraud Question And Answer

Does any one know of credit card fraud by swiping at merchant establishment even though card is with self?

I am holding this credit card from 2005 & it also has an add on credit card for my wife. I have not used my card for 1 year & my wife has not used it for at least 2 years. On 28th November 2007 my wife was contacted by a person claiming to be from the credit card company to check if she had carried out large value shopping on 26th/27th November. She informed the official that she did not have any card from their company & she had not used any credit card for any shopping since she was unsure about the bonafides of the company. I then called up the Customer Care Centre number & informed them that we had not carried out any shopping on any of our credit cards & that the cards were in our possession. The card company official informed us that a lot of transactions had taken place by swiping at merchant establishments & not through internet usage. Does any one know of credit card fraud by swiping at merchant establishment even though card is with self & not used for last 2 years ?

Perhaps they have not verified that the card was actually swiped, and not called in via telephone? My business takes credit card payments over the phone all the time, and they go through the terminal as if they were swiped, we just input the numbers on the keypad. If the card was really swiped, then you are a victim of identity theft. Call the Police.
I have heard of this. I think 20/20 (or some news show) did a special about it. Theives can steal your credit card numbers and make fake cards that can then be swiped at a merchant, just as well as if they had actually stolen your card. And they can put their names on it, so even if the store asks for ID, their ID (which is probably fake) will match what's on the card.
Check the FTC website .... there are sooo many despicable ways of stealing ones identity it boggles the mind. For a card that has not been used in awhile I would figure the last customer service person that handled you wife's transaction maybe be the culprit. It is not uncommon for store personnel to steal card numbers and ID's. Check your credit report immediately, dispute any charges that are not yours, cancel the account and destroy the card...good luck to you both.
