You can buy a specially made bank card number from your major credit card companies for a small fee...you set the amount and experation date on the card. So basically after you use it to buy an item you want online, peopel who steal the number can't use it to buy anything else, cause all the money on that virtual card has been spent from your purchase.

Open a checking account separate from all other accounts. Do not link it to any of your accounts for overdraft protection! Get a check card with the Visa symbol for that account. When you plan to purchase something via ecommerce, transfer the necessary funds into the account, then use your debit card for the purchase. I have had 3 fraud attempts to my account over the years, but the charges could not be completed because the funds were unavailable. The bank called me, and each time we confirmed that it was an unauthorized use of the card number, so the card was canceled and reissued. It dis not affect any of my other accounts and I have not lost anything...yet.
