Sorry this happened to you!!
There are a lot of sketchy sites out there- it sounds like you may have been a victim of phishing, not just a crappy company. Phishing is when companies create a legit-looking website to lure you into entering your confidential and financial information. When you are purchasing online, you should look for a lock icon in the bottom corner of your browser above the time. You should also look for a URL starting with https:// and make sure the URL is where you meant to go. Never click on a ecommerce site from an email or link, always go there yourself.
You might also try an anti-phishing toolbar or program. I'm working with one called ZoneAlarm ForceField that is a full browser security solution that checks for risks on the site you're on and lets you know, while keeping your comptuer safe, kind of like an online stunt double.
We have a free beta that might help you avoid situations like this in the future, if you think it might be helpful, you can go to www.zonealarm.com/forcefield to download.
Good luck!
