I have received an email lately from a man that called himself Edward Williams. He said that he was a llegal practitioner of Williams & Associates in Malaysia. He tolf me that a distant relative of mine had died and had no close relatives. He said that this person was worth $5,200,000 and that since he had no close family that I could be the beneficary of the money.Obviously it sounds like a bunch of lies and I told him that I never dream of giving him money to get money or sign anything without having a lawyer look at it first.I actually watched a Dateline NBC program on this kind of thing.I am just curious if anyone has any real info for me on this kind of thing?

Why are so many internet scams based in Nigeria?

No disrespect intended to the honest people who I'm sure live there as in other places. This is the pattern I am seeing: people who attempt to sell high-end electronics such as video game systems and cell phones via online markets are often targeted by scam artists. It's usually something like: "Hi, I live in the U.S. but I want you to ship this item to my relative in Nigeria, they are sick, I am sick, they serve their country, are a student etc etc some sort of sob story." Then if you agree to sell them the item they come back with fake information such as bogus Paypal payments, confirmations from the USPS regarding money orders sent or the offer to use their company FedEX account. I gave up trying to sell my PSP and gave it to a friend because the same scam artist kept "buying" it on eBay and trying to cheat me out of my system! What the heck is the deal with this bizarre and annoying phenomenon? I'm asking this because I'm truly interested and want to know, keep the nationalistic fervor and foreign country bashing to a minimum please =P Actually, just don't do it at all. It reflects poorly on your fellow Americans.

My scam involved an online dating site. This woman conned me into believing she was going to come and visit me in Texas she being in Mississippi. I was sceptical at 1st when she asked for money but after communicating with her for some time I sent money to the tune of over $700.00. It was all a scam as now she has changed her phone number and no longer answers her emails at her 2 addresses. Who do I report this to ? How do I get her arrested for this crime ?

Do you know how internet scams work?

It almost seems like when you sell an item, they put you on like an internet - all - call and send you the same message over and over. Usually it is the one where they say that they are in Africa and they want to transfer the money via pay pal. They always say they will pay more than what you're asking too. I just want to know how they send everyone the same message and I would also like to know how Yahoo Mail knows what emails to put in your bulk inbox.

Why does everyone think things on the internet are scams?

Every time I see a post in regard to making extra money online, I click the link and read it, sometimes I respond. I never spam, if I am asked how to make money and I think they would like what I do, I respond. Here's the part that annoys me the most... I get reported when someone asks a question and I respond. Why are people trolling questions to report people when you have done nothing but answer an honest question? I wouldn't be surprised if I am reported simply for starting this conversation. YES, there are tons of scammers on Answers trying to cash in on the people that don't know better, but there are people who answer honestly and truthfully. Heck, I can even provide proof of payment. So people who don't want spammers or scammers on the site, Great, I agree 100%, but just because someone can bring in a small income from using the internet, does not make it a scam. To avoid scams, do NOT pay anything, use gptboycott.com and marketingpond.com to see if they are scams. Also, if I were a big spammer/scammer, why would have I have so many points on here with 40% of my answers being accepted as best answer? Tammi D, I'm afraid I wasn't begging people to report me, I'm simply stating what seems to happen. heck, if you think I deserve to be reported for this, then yes, click your button. But do I deserve it simply for asking such a question? I guess people have been reported for less, so no big loss. It's been done before, it will happen again, and where will I be? Starting with a new account. Iguess I'm being cheeky, but then again, you were too. :) Most of you are right in that I answered my own question. It wasn't intentional, it just did a full 360. I think I wanted to give people some ideas as to why everyone thinks they are scams. Or possibly, I wanted to see if everyone read my entire question, which I don't think many do when the questions are beyond three sentences. Chuck, I know exactly what you are talking about... the free ipods. Yup! not a scam, well depending on what site you are looking at. But you are right, do your research and you won't be ripped off.

how do you report internet scams by users of your website?

One of your users is perpetrating a scam whereby he posts a profile as a tragic widower w/ a young son on a singles' website and forms a romantic relationship just prior to leaving on a short-term government teaching contract for Nigeria. Before he goes he freezes his bank accounts and credit cards (for his own security) While away, and with daily multiple frequent ptofessions of undying love and imminent future marriage, he encounters countless problems there, all requiring funds (rapidly exhausting the supposed $10,000.00 he brought w/ him), the final being that his son falls ill, develops a brain tumor and must have immediate surgery or he will go insane! Of course w/ his accounts & cards frozen, only you can wire the money to save his son's sanity and life (not, not, not!!!!!)His bank can't do this because there is no similar bank branch in Nigeria (hogwash)!!! I have all printouts and a background check on this internet scam artist.so please contact me and let's stop him!! I contacted local police, They said that since I didn't send the money, that tecnically , Y wan't a victim and that I should contact the ISP for iwas a federal crime to try to use the internet to perpetrate such scams. So, that is what I am trying to do. But I haven't been ab;e to get a valid reporting site from MSN or YAHOO. I am only out a few hundred dollars in phone calls, but I guarantee that someone else will or has been takemn in by this !!!

How can Google be involved in internet scams???

In trying to find a PS3, I came across BigWinterDeal, only accepting Western Union, referencing EICAFraud.org. Yahoo Answers really helped me determine this is a scam. However, I found this scammer via a Google Sponsored link. How can Google accept ad revenue from such an obvious internet scam? In my mind this calls into question every Google Sponsored Link. I know "Buyer Beware" but I feel internet giants like Google and Yahoo have an obligation weed out obvious scam businesses before doing business with them. Do they do Due Dilegence? How about Corporate respnsibility? Are they not liable if assisting a known scammer to do business?

Internet scams. Can they damage your credit or Identity by knowing your first/last name?

My teenage friend accidentally wrote back to some "poor old dying man of cancer" (who by the way, has been writing to people about his 'fatal illness' since 2004) and on the 'reply' email.. it contained her real last and first name. She had honestly thought he was genuine and so they exchanged snail mail addresses... it wasn't until recently that she and I deicided to look his name up and find him on the internet scam artist list (since 2004) So now, we're wondering.. can any damage be done with him having her address, name/last name.. and apparently phone number (since they had been pen-pals for so long?) Thanks in advance! Also, why do all of these cons often come from Africa/Dubai/Russia? is that some sort of hobbie they have down there or something?

internet scams including UK National lottery?

I believe that i have been a victim of an internet scam. I recieved an email stating that I had won a lottery and to contact the fiduciary agent. Who or what agency can I report this to? I have lost approx $1500 in this scam and i am quite irritated. Any suggestions on how to go about correcting this and insuring that others do not get scammed by this. Any suggestions other that I was an idiot..... I already have figured out that one.

I cannot understand why so many people fall for these internet scams. They must be Idiots. Or greedy?

Surely if it sounds too good to be true, It is too good to be true. I admit there are some very convincing scams. People must think carefully. Use search before making a commitment. Best bet is just to laugh and delete these idiotic scams. It is so easy to see a scam such as the Lottery Scams, Or the I have got milions and need help to get this into the country. I see many Questions asking users if they think these are genuine, Should I answer this e-mail. People should not have to ask. No-One gives money away. People just do not take on help to move millions of pounds in this day and age of electronic transfers. Nor do people win millions of pounds in Competitions they have never entered. To be honest. Some people should never be allowed near a P.C. They treat them as toys and just a message service, Or chat room. The Internet can be a dangerous place, Even for the professional user.

What are some internet scams? I had a scary experience with a scam using PayPal's information.?

I had always heard about internet scams but never encountered them until today. Well occasionally I buy things online and pay with PayPal. I've never had a problem with them and I still don't. But I got an email that looked legitimate, had the PayPal address (it looked like it did) so I opened it. The content of the email looked like a PayPal email looks. It said my personal information needed updating and I should click on their link which they provided. It looked exactly like the PayPal website--it was incredible. I think they hijacked the PayPal website because all the details were the same. They asked me to enter my password which I did. But when they said they needed me to fill in my credit card numbers I did not. At that time I checked my status bar and there was no lock. Long story shorter, it was a scam. I contacted PayPal and they said to send it to them and gave me their "spoof" address. So be sure if you go to Pay Pal, use a new browser window. I did change my password right away. The ironic thing is that PayPay did want additional information that looked exactly like the bogus site. This is for Norma W. You are commenting to my answer I gave to a different question.
